CDMA (code division multiple access) - an all-digital transmission system that breaks calls down into coded bytes. In conventional cellular systems, customer calls ride on analog radio waves. Only CDMA uses "soft handoff." Handoff is what happens to a call when a customer drives out of the coverage of one cell into the coverage of another. With soft handoff the call is simultaneously connected to both cell sites, meaning the call is not forced to degrade before handoff, maintaining call quality and minimizing dropped calls.

CDMA-BSC - code division multiple access - base system controller

CNC - computer numerical controller

CRT (cathode ray tube) - a specialized vacuum tube in which images are produced when an electron beam strikes a phosphorescent surface. Most desktop computer displays make use of CRTs. The CRT in a computer display is similar to the "picture tube" in a television receiver.

DAMA/SCPC - demand assignment multiple access/single channel per carrier

DCCR - direct current control rack

DCS/MSC - digital cellular system / mobile switching center

DSL (digital subscriber line) - dedicated, ultra-fast Internet access service

DSLAM (digital subscriber line access multiplexer) -a network device, usually at a telephone company central office, that receives signals from multiple customer digital subscriber line (DSL) connections and puts the signals on a high-speed backbone line using multiplexing techniques. Depending on the product, DSLAM multiplexers connect DSL lines with some combination of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), frame relay, or Internet Protocol networks. DSLAM enables a phone company to offer business or home users the fastest phone line technology (DSL) with the fastest backbone network technology (ATM).

HDLC (high-level data link control) - a group of protocol or rules for transmitting data between network points (sometimes called node). In HDLC, data is organized into a unit (called a frame) and sent across a network to a destination that verifies its successful arrival. The HDLC protocol also manages the flow or pacing at which data is sent. HDLC is one of the most commonly used protocols in what is Layer 2 of the industry communication reference model called Open Systems Interconnection (OSI).

PABX - private automatic branch exchange

PBX ( private branch exchange ) - a telephone system within an enterprise that switches calls between enterprise users on local lines while allowing all users to share a certain number of external phone lines. The main purpose of a PBX is to save the cost of requiring a line for each user to the telephone company's central office.

PCB - printed circuit board

PCS (personal communications services) - a two-way, 1900 M Hz digital voice, messaging and data service designed as the second generation of cellular. In PCS systems, calls are handled in streams of digital bits and bytes, resulting in a signal that is noticeably clearer and free from cross talk.

PDP (plasma display panel) - plasma display devices have higher resolution than conventional TV sets, and are capable of displaying full HDTV and DTV signals as well as XGA, SVGA and VGA signals from a computer. These devices are equipped with a high-resolution 1024 x 1024 pixel panel that can display images at true 1080i and 720p HDTV resolution, as well as 480i and 480p HD signals. Monitors are perfectly flat.
